TORONTO, February 20, 2010 -- At the Society's annual Chinese New Year Banquet in Toronto, Ontario, the board of directors of the International Taoist Tai Chi Society presented a cheque for $100,000 to the Fondation Paul Gérin-Lajoie to assist in the rebuilding of an "École Nationale" (National School) in Jacmel, Haiti.
Soon after the disaster struck, the board of directors of the International Taoist Tai Chi Society decided to take part in the worldwide relief effort to alleviate the suffering of the people affected by this terrible event. At that time, the Society pledged, on behalf of its members, a minimum of $25,000 towards the reconstruction of schools and the resumption of educational programs in Haiti. However, due to the generosity of its members in 26 countries around the world, the Society was able to contribute four times the amount originally pledged.
As it had done after tragedies that struck Kosovo, Sri Lanka and Sichuan, the ITTCS opted to bypass first-line relief efforts, which are adequately funded through government organizations and large NGOs. Instead, it will again help fund the reconstruction of schools in partnership with a recognized NGO that already has an active presence in the affected regions.
