Health Recovery Program

Combining Eastern and Western health perspectives through the practice of the Taoist Tai Chi† internal arts of health.

The Health Recovery Program provides an opportunity for everyone, including those with significant illness, to improve their quality of life through the intensive practice of the Taoist Tai Chi† internal arts of health in the calm and supportive setting of a Taoist training centre. The program has been in operation since 1997 and is the first of its kind in Canada. It reflects our vision, as established by our founder, Master Moy Lin-shin, of providing the health improvement benefits of these teachings to all.

The Health Recovery Program was made possible through Master Moy Lin-shin’s tireless efforts to pass on the gift of his internal arts of health to others, and through his worldwide fundraising activities.

Who can benefit from this program?

The practice of Taoist Tai Chi† internal arts of health will help alleviate a broad range of difficulties, including those resulting from ageing, injury, stress, physical inactivity and chronic disease. The Health Recovery Program is available to all those who express an interest. Over the course of the week, participants will have the opportunity to develop their own plan of health improvement that can be continued once home.

A number of professionals and institutions providing health care services have referred their clients to
the Health Recovery Program. This includes those involved in establishing rehabilitation programs
as well as insurance companies.

Health Recovery Program services

The Taoist Tai Chi† internal arts of health are the sole disciplines employed in the Health Recovery Program. A senior instructor establishes the focus of each week based on the needs of the participants. Assistance is also provided by other volunteer instructors accredited by the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada or the International Taoist Tai Chi Society. Over the course of their stay, participants grow more confident in their ability to incorporate these activities into their daily routine. When available, the option of subsequent support at an affiliated branch of the International Taoist Tai Chi Society is offered. The volunteer contribution of the instructors and helpers makes it possible to offer this program at fees that are affordable to all.

Training and research

Another goal of the Health Recovery Program is to provide, under appropriate supervision, valuable learning opportunities for volunteer instructors to gain experience in teaching the Taoist Tai Chi† internal arts of health to those with health problems. The Health Recovery Program also serves as a resource for gathering data to further evaluate the health recoverybenefits of Taoist Tai Chi ™ internal arts of health. Research on the physical and psycho-social changes brought about by the practice of these arts helps bridge the gap between Western and Eastern perspectives on health and well being.
